Honoring Our Rivers is kicking off the New Year by facilitating and presenting at the next Willamette Valley Environmental Education Roundtable in Salem this Thursday, January 5.
Free and open to all interested in environmental education, the Roundtable is a networking opportunity for professionals to learn about each other's work, give updates, and forge meaningful partnerships to advance the quality and synergize the efforts of environmental education in the region.
HOR's coordinator, Tess Malijenovsky, will present on, "The Value of the Creative Arts in Environmental Education (And How You Can Integrate Them Into Your Program)." Often times, making time for art and creative writing is not a priority in most classrooms, due to tight budgets, an ever-growing list of state standard mandates, and a general sense that the arts are lovely but not essential. Tess will share how the creative arts advance environmental literacy--equity, meeting the Next Generation Science Standards, workforce skills, creative thinking skills, and emotive power--and tell you how to bring the creative arts into your classroom with Honoring Our Rivers.
Also presenting will be editor and publisher of CLEARING Magazine, Larry Beutler, who will tell you more about his nonprofit publication providing teaching resources to environmental educators in the Pacific Northwest.
