Ever year, Honoring Our Rivers features a section in the beginning of the student anthology that has a special sub-theme. In the 2017 edition, the sub-theme was "Working Rivers" to honor its major sponsor, the Port of Portland. (See "Working Rivers" on pages 6-13 of the current anthology for example of theme section).
We are excited to announce the sub-theme for our next edition: Celebrating tribes of the Pacific Northwest and their ancestral and present-day relationships to rivers.
Everyone is invited to participate in this sub-theme, and we hope it inspires educators and parents to investigate and discuss this topic with their students. Here are some suggestions for how this theme might be applied, but we invite you to go beyond:
- Water sites of tribal significance
- Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) perspective
- Traditional uses of native plants, fish, and animals
- Tribal language
- Historical anecdotes from tribal elders
- Native American artists, authors, and poets of the Pacific Northwest!
